Dr. Shafik Sachedina was born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, Africa in 1950. He attended the University of London, Guy’s Hospital Medical and Dental School, for a dental surgery degree and graduated in 1975. He started his practice as a dental surgeon in England, where he has been working for several years.
He developed an interest in entrepreneurship, especially in the healthcare sector, which led to him starting Sussex Healthcare. This is a group of care homes that is dedicated to providing support services to the elderly people, people with physical difficulties, and those with mental issues, including learning issues, Alzheimer disease, and dementia. Other than being the founder and the owner of Sussex Healthcare, Shafik Sachedina is also a joint chairman there.
Dr. Sachedina is also the head of the Department in Jamati Institutions in France an institute associated with Aga Khan Foundation. His position in the institution is voluntary not a constitutional one and so the Jamati Institutions’ department is not capable of offering new directions to the other institutions.
Dr. Sachedina is also involved in the projects and activities coordination in the Institute of Ismaili Society in all the 16 campuses. Ismaili Society Institute is a London- based Research Institute that works toward promoting the learning of Muslim culture and societies, in the contemporary and in the past, so as to promote more understanding of how they relate with other faiths and societies. It also educates the Ismaili community of their history. Since it is an establishment of Aga Khan, it is in the role of Dr. Sachedina to interface with Central Asia’s Institutions of Ismaili communities and the programmes of Aga Khan Development Network. However, the institution is not supposed to report to him, but rather to the Imam.
Due to his strong leadership skills, Dr. Sachedina is a member in several boards and organizations which include; Institute’s board of Governors, the committee of Aga Khan Development Network, and Ismaili Leaders’ International Forum. He also serves on the FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance International Co-ordinating Committee as the chairman. Dr. Sachedina has served in several voluntary capacities and now he is a volunteer president of the United Kingdom’s Ismaili Council for two terms.
In October 2017, Dr. Sachedina leads the Agha Khan Foundation’s delegation to meet Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, to discuss on the present situation of the Middle East, more so the Syria and Afghanistan developments. Sachedina commended Russia’s consistency in embracing peaceful conflict resolutions, and dedication to fight against extremism and terrorism.
